Greg McKinney
Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary
Since 2021, I have worked closely with Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary in Shetland, documenting the rehabilitation of seals and otters and supporting the charity’s conservation and fundraising efforts through photography and film.
During this time, I have contributed to a range of projects, including documenting the excavation of a stranded killer whale named Linga, whose articulated skeleton will form part of the sanctuary’s educational display. I continue to follow and develop this story as a long-term documentary project focused on marine conservation and public education.
I have also worked alongside the Scottish Marine Animal Stranding Scheme (SMASS) while they conducted a post-mortem examination of a harbour porpoise. Monitoring stranded marine wildlife provides vital insight into ocean health, and documenting this process highlighted the scientific work that underpins marine conservation.
My ongoing connection with the sanctuary has given me rare access to both frontline wildlife care and the wider environmental challenges affecting coastal communities. Through stills, film and social content, I aim to create honest, human-centred stories that raise awareness, support fundraising, and deepen public understanding of conservation issues.
Jan & Pete - Our Story
This short promotional film provides an introduction to Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary and was created to support
the launch of the sanctuary’s new website.
I worked as the video editor on this project, shaping existing footage into a concise, engaging film that communicates the sanctuary’s mission and conservation work.
